Mainland China's two stock exchanges, Shanghai and Shenzhen, both have shares prefixed by the letters A or B.
A-shares are denominated in the Chinese yuan (renminbi) and are mostly traded by Chinese domestic investors, and only select foreign institutional investors can trade in this market.
B-shares are denominated in a foreign currency (U.S. dollars in Shanghai and Hong Kong dollars in Shenzhen). They typically don't offer investors much liquidity.
H-shares are shares of companies incorporated in mainland China that are traded on the Hong Kong stock exchange and denominated in Hong Kong dollars.
Many Chinese companies offer both A-shares and H-shares. H-shares are typically quite liquid and easily accessible to foreign investors.
